The Masks We Wear

Scripture: Genesis 3:7-10

There’s something exhausting about pretending.

Pretending you’re okay when you’re anxious. Pretending your marriage is fine when it’s strained. Pretending you’re strong when inside you feel numb, distant, or afraid. Shame has a way of convincing us that hiding is safer than being known.

That’s exactly what happened in Eden.

The moment Adam and Eve sinned, shame entered the story. Genesis says their eyes were opened, they realized they were naked, and they hid from God among the trees. Before sin, there was openness. After sin, there were masks.

Shame always pushes us toward hiding.

It hides behind sarcasm. Productivity. Busyness. Church smiles. Carefully curated social media lives. Sometimes we hide so long we forget we’re even doing it. We become physically present but emotionally absent—disconnected from God, others, and even ourselves.

But notice something important: God comes looking for them.

“Where are you?”

Not because God lost them. Because they had lost themselves.

God’s question wasn’t condemnation—it was invitation.

Shame says, “Hide.”God says, “Come home.”

The tragedy of exile isn’t just distance from a place; it’s distance from relationship. Shame convinces us that if people really knew us, they wouldn’t want us. Worse, it whispers that God must feel the same way.

But the gospel tells a different story.

Jesus did not come for polished people pretending to have it together. He came for hiding people. People carrying shame. People exhausted from trying to save themselves.

You don’t heal by hiding better. You heal by stepping into the light.

Maybe today your next step is simple honesty:“God, I’m tired of pretending.”“God, I’ve been hiding.”“God, I want to come home.”

That prayer may feel small—but it’s the beginning of freedom.

Reflection Question:

What mask have you been wearing lately, and what would it look like to bring that honestly before God?
