Buried and Raised

Scripture: Romans 6:3-4
Water baptism is more than a church tradition. It’s a declaration.
Paul says that through baptism we are buried with Christ and raised to walk in new life. That means baptism is not merely about getting wet—it’s about identifying with Jesus.
Going under the water symbolizes death:death to sin, death to the old life, death to trying to save yourself.
Coming out of the water symbolizes resurrection:new life, new identity, new belonging.
That’s powerful because many people spend their lives trying to reinvent themselves through self-help, achievement, or image management. But baptism announces something different: real transformation comes through Jesus, not self-salvation.
In Scripture, baptism was never treated as an optional extra for especially committed Christians. It was the natural response of someone surrendering their life to Jesus. Again and again in Acts, people believed and were baptized.
Why?
Because baptism is a public act of trust.
It’s standing before others and saying:“My old life no longer defines me.”“Jesus is my Lord now.”“I belong to Him.”
And there’s something freeing about outward obedience. Obedience grounds our faith in reality. Baptism becomes a physical reminder that your identity is no longer rooted in shame, failure, addiction, performance, or the opinions of others.
You belong to Christ.
Maybe you’ve been following Jesus privately but have never taken the step of baptism publicly. Don’t minimize what God may want to do through your obedience.
Baptism does not save you—Jesus does. But baptism is a beautiful act of surrender to the One who already has.
Reflection Question:
If you haven’t been baptized, what may be holding you back from taking that step of obedience?
