A New Heart

Scripture: Ezekiel 36:25-27
Most of us want change—but we usually want it externally.
Better habits. Better routines. Better circumstances.
God goes deeper than behavior. He addresses the heart.
Through Ezekiel, God gives an incredible promise to people living in exile:
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.”
That’s important because the condition of our hearts determines the direction of our lives. Hard hearts drift toward isolation, self-protection, and pride. Tender hearts move toward surrender, compassion, and intimacy with God.
The scary thing about hard hearts is they rarely happen all at once.
A little disappointment.A little bitterness.A little compromise.A little hiding.
Over time, layers build until we become spiritually numb. We still function. Still attend church. Still go through routines. But deep down, we’ve grown resistant to God.
That’s why self-improvement alone is never enough.
You cannot transform a heart by willpower alone.
You can modify behavior temporarily, but only the Holy Spirit can make dead places alive again.
And this is the hope of the gospel: God does not merely give better rules; He gives new life. Through Jesus, God places His Spirit within us so we can begin to desire what is good, true, and life-giving.
Christianity is not primarily about trying harder. It’s about becoming new.
Maybe today you recognize areas where your heart has become guarded or numb. Don’t hide that from God. Bring it to Him honestly.
God specializes in replacing stone hearts with living ones.
Reflection Question:
Where do you sense your heart becoming hard, defensive, or spiritually numb?
