When Opposition Follows Obedience

Scripture:
“Now he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up by the road, some young boys came out from the city and ridiculed him.” — 2 Kings 2:23
Many people assume that obedience to God should lead to an easier life. We think that if we’re following God’s will, the path should become smoother, the criticism should disappear, and people should appreciate our efforts.
Elisha’s story teaches us otherwise.
Just before this moment, Elisha had experienced incredible spiritual victories. He received Elijah’s mantle, witnessed God’s power, crossed the Jordan River, and purified contaminated water. Everything seemed to be moving in the right direction. Then suddenly, opposition arrived.
The timing is important. The criticism didn’t come before the blessing. It came after it.
Sometimes we are surprised when difficulties show up after we’ve taken a step of faith. We assume something must be wrong. Yet throughout Scripture, opposition often follows obedience. The enemy rarely wastes energy opposing people who are standing still.
If you’ve recently stepped out in faith and found yourself facing resistance, don’t immediately assume you’ve missed God’s will. It may be evidence that you’re walking directly in it.
Faithfulness doesn’t guarantee a trouble-free life. It guarantees God’s presence in the middle of your troubles.
The question isn’t whether opposition will come. The question is whether you’ll remain faithful when it does.
Prayer:
Father, help me remain faithful when opposition comes. When criticism, setbacks, or discouragement arise, remind me that You are still with me. Give me courage to continue obeying You even when the path becomes difficult. Help me trust Your presence more than my circumstances. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
